Name Picker
Pick a pupil at random without anyone feeling singled out. Paste your class list once; the picker can set names aside after they are chosen so that everybody has a turn before anyone repeats.
How to use the Name Picker
- Type or paste your class list into the box, one name per line.
- Press Pick a name. The chosen name appears large enough to read from the back of the room.
- Leave Set picked names aside ticked to avoid repeats. The counter under the box shows how many names are left.
- Press Put everyone back to start a new round.
Ways to use it in class
- Cold-calling with fairness: ask the question first, pause for thinking time, then pick, so every pupil prepares an answer.
- Reading aloud or sharing out: tick “set aside” so each pupil is chosen once per round.
- Choosing a helper, line leader or feedback giver without the usual hands-up favourites.
- Use first names only, or initials, if you would rather not keep full names on the device.
Good to know
- Your list is saved in this browser on this computer only, so it is there next time you visit. Clearing the box removes it. The list is shared with the Group Maker, so you only paste it once.
- Nothing is uploaded, so there is no account and no class data held by us.
- Random means random: short runs of repeats can happen if “set aside” is switched off.
Frequently asked questions
Where is my class list stored?
In your browser’s local storage on the device you are using. It is never sent to a server. Clear the text box, or clear site data in your browser, to remove it.
Will the same pupil be picked twice in a row?
Not while “Set picked names aside” is ticked, because a chosen name is removed from the pool until everybody has had a turn. Once the pool is empty, a new round starts automatically, or you can press Put everyone back.
Can I use it on a different computer?
You would need to paste the list again, because the list stays on the device where you typed it. That is deliberate: it keeps pupil names off the internet.
Is it genuinely random?
Yes. It chooses uniformly from the names still in the pool each time.
