Calm Breathing Buddy

Ready?

A big, slow circle that grows as the class breathes in and shrinks as they breathe out. It takes under two minutes and helps a room settle after break, before an assessment, or whenever the mood needs a reset.

How to use the Calm Breathing Buddy

  1. Choose a pattern: bubble (in 4, out 4), box (in 4, hold 4, out 4, hold 4) or 4-7-8 (in 4, hold 7, out 8).
  2. Choose the length: 1, 2, 3 or 5 minutes.
  3. Press Start and ask the class to breathe in as the circle grows and out as it shrinks. Use Fullscreen on the board.
  4. Model it yourself for the first few breaths. Pupils copy what they see.

Frequently asked questions

Which pattern should I start with?

Bubble breathing (in for 4, out for 4) is the simplest and works for all ages. Move to box breathing when the class is comfortable.

How long should a session be?

One to two minutes is plenty for most classes. Longer sessions suit older pupils and calm-down spaces.

Is this suitable for pupils with anxiety?

Many pupils find a slow, predictable routine reassuring, but it is not a treatment. Follow your school’s guidance and your SENCo’s advice for individual pupils, and let anyone opt out of breath-holds.

Does it need sound?

No. It is entirely visual, so it works in a silent room and for pupils who are hard of hearing.
